Mat Pilates Classes at Bassendean Physiotherapy incorporates Pilates exercises to improve strength and muscle activation of key areas including postural muscles, gluteals and the muscles surrounding your shoulder blade. These classes are suitable for those wanting to participate in low-impact exercise to help improve over-all muscle tone and flexibility.

They are a safe and effective form of exercise which is suitable for anyone of any age and of any fitness or ability.

Group sizes are very small, between 1-4 clients per class, to enable close monitoring and progression of exercises. You are never alone!

Our Mat Classes offer basic pilates exercise techniques to improve the strength of your arms, legs and trunk. It will also target your whole body’s flexibility, helping to reduce stiffness, particularly in the lower and mid back.

You will begin with a one-on-one consultation with a Physiotherapist for a thorough initial assessment. This includes injury history and movement analysis, and an introduction to the exercises and equipment.

Recent scientific research in the field of Physiotherapy supports the key features and principles of the method. Thus our physiotherapists have undergone extensive training so that they can use Pilates as part of the rehabilitation process.

Pilates can help improve posture, stability and coordination

These classes will include body weight exercises as well as exercises with fit balls, theraband and light weights.

What are the benefits?

Mat-based classes allow you to use your own body weight to carry out a variety of Rehabilitative and Pilates informed exercises, using the smaller equipment such as resistance bands, fit balls etc.

This class may be a great option to progress yourself from ‘clinical pilates’ otherwise known as our Pilates-Informed-Exercises. However, please keep in mind that this program is not individualised.
They are suitable for people of all ages and the benefits include:

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

An initial assessment by one of our Pilates-trained Physiotherapists is required before attending this class to determine suitability, injury history and movement analysis. This class does have prerequisites in terms of strength.

Can You Claim Health Insurance?

Mat Pilates Exercises are no longer covered by private health as of April 1st 2019. Pilates-informed exercises prescribed by physiotherapists as a part of their treatment program will be eligible to claim a rebate.

What Next?

From there you will join our supervised sessions in our specialized studio. Although these classes are not individualised, you will work closely with over a series of sessions with the the physiotherapist to help improve posture, stability and coordination.

FAQS

Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist?

No. A referral is not necessary, however your GP or specialist may refer you to a physiotherapist. Please bring the referral with you so we can communicate with your doctor about your progress

Are private health insurance rebates available?

Mat Pilates Exercises are no longer covered by private health as of April 1st 2019.

Pilates-informed exercises prescribed by physiotherapists as a part of their treatment program will be eligible to claim a rebate. Pilates offered in other contexts such as purely for fitness will not be able to claim. To learn more about Pilates-informed exercise classes click here.

Do I need to book in to the Mat Pilates Classes?

Yes! All Classes require pre-booking. If we can not fit you into your preferred time we can waitlist you.

Please note that a 12 hour notice of cancellation is required.

What do I need to bring for a Mat Class?

You will need to bring a towel and socks, and to wear loose,  comfortable clothing. Yoga and gym gear is ideal.
